"Music is an adventure, for both its creators and its listeners. I'd like to think of 'Jazz Up Late' as a musical adventure - and like any adventure, it might range from the sublime to the hair-raising. I'll be exploring contemporary jazz at home and from around the world as well as looking at emerging trends and how the music of other cultures and genres are currently influencing jazz.
The A to Z of jazz fascinates me, no matter which period in its history it comes from...Louis Armstrong's clarion trumpet from the '20s still gives me goose bumps...and then there's the exhilarating rush that John Zorn's confronting and ferocious 'Painkiller' induces, with so much in between!
'Jazz Up Late' has been created to complement Mal Stanley's 'Jazztrack', to appeal to avid fans of the music and the 'jazz curious' alike and to explore the world of jazz beyond 'Jazztrack'.
It's been said that jazz is 'the sound of surprise', I'm certainly still finding it so...and I hope that you will too, on 'Jazz Up Late'."

This week features two previously unreleased recordings from the influential South African pianist Chris McGregor, both recorded in 1969 on the eve of the birth of one of the most celebrated of big bands, the Brotherhood of Breath. One features McGregor in a trio setting with bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Louis Moholo, and the other a star-studded septet where the trio is joined by sax men John Surman, Evan Parker and Dudu Pukwana, and trumpeter Mongezi Feza.
We’ll also hear from a new CD entitled “Miles From India”, a cross-cultural celebration of the music of Miles Davis by some of India’s foremost musicians collaborating with some of the key players of the Miles’ bands over the years.
The ‘India connection’ continues with a selection from the Australian Art Orchestra’s collaboration with the Sruthi Laya Ensemble and their acclaimed recording “Into The Fire”.
Double bassist Mario Pavone returns with his new CD featuring his ‘double tenor’ quartet and we’ll also hear from guitarist James Blood Ulmer, multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee and the latest from the recently reformed Microscopic Septet. And more....
This week the Jazz Tardis travels back to 1978 as we delve into a fascinating work by the eclectic pianist and composer Keith Tippett. The recently re-issued “Frames: Music for an Imaginary Film” features Tippett’s 22-member collective, Ark, in an ambitious fusion of orchestral and free jazz music.
Another “soundtrack” approach features the reformed ensemble Quest, with David Leibman, Richard Beirach, Ron McClure and Billy Hart with a response to the tragedy of September 11. We’ll hear Liebman’s “WTC” and Beirach’s “Steel Prayers” recorded in concert in Switzerland in 2005.
We’ll hear guitarist Elliot Sharpe’s tribute to a fellow axe-man – the innovative Sonny Sharrock, and Australia’s New Blood in concert in Gdansk in Poland.
Keyboardist Wayne Horvitz and his Gravitas Quartet’s new CD is also on the bill and we’ll also hear from a new CD by pianist Yitzhak Yedid from Jerusalem with the unusual instrumentation of oud, double bass and piano – it’s a fascinating fusion of jazz, contemporary classical and Middle Eastern music.
