Samaritans welcome funding boost for crisis accommodation

Posted March 24, 2005 09:16:00

The Anglican welfare group, the Samaritans, has welcomed millions of dollars worth of new state funding for crisis accommodation in the Hunter.

The NSW Government has announced $3.7 million to fund 27 new crisis homes in the Newcastle, Maitland, Morisset and Adamstown areas.

Samaritans chief executive officer Cec Shevels says the funding is most needed because crisis accommodation is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

"Public housing is not increasing and rents continue to increase so we believe it's a problem that's going to get worse year by year," he said.

"So we're finding increasing problems with people coming to us within a crisis, say someone in domestic violence needing accommodation tonight, where do you go?

"It's really difficult to find somewhere."
