Grazier's phone woes amaze senators

Posted April 15, 2005 12:19:00

A Louth grazier's experience of waiting 16 days for Telstra to fix her phone has shocked senators at a public hearing into telecommunications.

Tess LeLievre drove six hours to Dubbo, in central western NSW, to have her say at yesterday's Senate hearing.

She says Telstra services are nowhere near ready for a full sale.

"About the second week of January my phone went out of order and it was out for 16 days, all sorts of excuses all sorts of reasons...but it was [a] breakdown of communications," she said.

After hearing about Ms LeLievre's phone, Labor Senator Stephen Conroy said he did not realise services were so bad.

Mr Conroy says he was also surprised to hear how far the Mayor of Narromine, Bob Barnett, travels to get a reliable Internet connection.

"One of the local mayors, instead of trying to use dial up Internet on his farm, he drives 30 kilometres into Dubbo to use his daughter's just to say he has a bale ready on his farm and that's just an extraordinary situation," he said.
