Police say while they are yet to formally identify a man whose body was found off the coast at Port Stephens at the weekend they believe they know who he is.

The man's body was recovered off Soldiers Point at around 3:00pm AEDT on Saturday and police are now waiting for the results of a forensic examination to determine his identity.

Lower Hunter duty officer Peter Fox says the man is believed to be a fisherman whose boat was found moored nearby.

"We're still not releasing his name at this stage, but we do believe we know who he is," he said.

"We just want to confirm it with relatives at this stage, but we believe he was a man in his 60's from the south coast.

"We obviously have leads but we need to confirm [the man's identity] before we go releasing particulars."

Meanwhile, a man's body was found in an Adamstown house on Saturday night, but police say there are no suspicious circumstances.
