Posted July 2, 2006 13:19:00

Police are appealing for information from the public about the theft of $500,000 worth of customised copper rods from a transport company at Laverton in Melbourne's west.

The 20 boxes of rods were taken from the business in Fitzgerald road this morning.

The rods were destined for an aluminium smelter works in Portland,

Police believe the thieves used a forklift to load the rods onto a truck, after gaining access to a locked yard.
