Hopes relationship centre will reduce Family Court battles

Posted July 3, 2006 21:15:00

It is hoped South Australia's first family relationship centre will help reduce the number of cases that end up in the Family Court.

The new Salisbury centre received a flood of phone calls on its first day of operation.

It offers free and low-cost counselling to all family members at any stage of relationship problems.

Manager Lorraine Baker says the service is part of national changes to family law aimed at dealing with relationship breakdowns without the courts.

"As from July next year it will be compulsory that people attempt to under take mediation if the situation is safe for them to do so," she said.

The Salisbury office is one of 15 across Australia.

Four more centres will be built in South Australia by the end of next year at Port Augusta, Mount Gambier, Noarlunga and Adelaide City.
