Fatal Laverton crash 'could have been avoided'

Posted October 6, 2006 08:37:00

Victoria's road toll continues to rise, after a collision claimed two lives last night at Laverton, in Melbourne's west.

The incident occurred on the Princes Freeway near the Forsyth Road overpass just after 7:00pm AEST.

A woman stopped her car after the bonnet flew open and walked to the roadside.

Before she could return to move her car off the road, a second car crashed into it, pushing both cars towards the inside emergency lane.

An empty fuel tanker then collided with the second car, causing it to catch on fire.

The two occupants died instantly.

Sergeant Darren Williams says the safety message still is not getting through.

"The message is clear and it's been said by our people all along, that people need to take a bit more care and attention with they're driving," he said.

"Something like this could have been avoided."
