Queensland were languishing at 7 for 114 at tea on the first of their first-class four-day match against South Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Chris Hartley was on 29 and Andy Bichel 23 for the Bulls, the pair having put on 37 runs after the visitors had been reduced to 7 for 77.

Jason Gillespie has done the bulk of the damage for the Redbacks, taking 4 for 30 off 16 overs.

Mark Cosgrove has 2 for 22 and Paul Rofe 1 for 23.

The Bulls won the toss and elected to bat but were unable to capitalise on the situation, with openers Lachlan Stevens falling for a duck and captain Jimmy Maher out for 9.

Shane Watson made a surprise comeback for the Bulls after missing the opening two Ashes Tests with injury, but was trapped in front by Gillespie for 5.

Craig Philipson was caught at mid-wicket for 15 off the last ball of the first session, leaving the Bulls 4 for 42 at lunch.

Gillespie bowled James Hopes (3) and then trapped Clinton Perren (19) in front after the interval, with Cosgrove then removing Ashley Noffke (8).
