Firefighters control Pilliga forest blaze

Posted January 15, 2007 10:00:00

Forests New South Wales says firefighters have managed to gain the upper hand on a blaze burning in the Pilliga State Forest.

Regional manager Paul Wells says the 1,800 hectare fire is burning within containment lines about 45 kilometres south-west of Narrabri.

He says about 40 firefighters will work today to strengthen containment lines to prevent the fire from spreading.

"We had pretty good conditions yesterday, we had quite a bit of easterly winds overnight, but the reports today is that the fire is still within containment lines, so if we can maintain the fire within containment lines things should go okay," he said.
