RTA under fire over wheelchair fundraising route decision

Posted April 20, 2007 09:04:00

A Tumut man who wants to roll his wheelchair from Tumut to Adelong to raise funds for charity has not ruled out action against the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) for refusing his application.

Des Downes has had to choose an alternative route for the event in early May and has been granted RTA approval.

He says the RTA's refusal to let him travel along the Snowy Mountains Highway has upset many people.

"The people are right behind me in the town, they've said they're going to take it further themselves. I see it as totally unreasonable when you have bike riders on the road and they're raising funds and they've got a support crew," he said.

"Apparently there's a lady walking from Orange to Wagga with a support crew."

The RTA says it refused Mr Downes permission to use that section of the Snowy Mountains Highway for the safety of all road users.
