Handy in-flows received around Bourke

Posted May 24, 2007 10:00:00

Rain a week ago around Bourke, Brewarrina and Louth, in central western New South Wales, has produced in-flows into the Darling River.

Bourke Shire Mayor Wayne O'Mally says in recent days there have been significant in-flows up to 1,700 megalitres a day from the Culgoa River, as well as smaller quantities from run-off in the lower reaches of the Bogan.

He says it is welcome relief, but will be short lived.

"In the immediate reaches above Bourke it's already started to fall and once it does start to fall it will fall pretty dramatically," he said.

"It's pretty much a turn off, turn on type situation with the tap and in the next few days there will be greatly reduced in-flows."

Councillor O'Mally says the Bourke town supply is now at capacity.

"The Bourke weir, the 19A, the 20A and the Louth weir are all spilling," he said.

"So all this water that's heading on down now will pretty much go straight through on towards Tilpa and downstream of there to give these people very much needed relief."

He also says because the rain was steady and soaking there has been minimal damage to local roads, but the Weilmoringle road north of Bourke is still closed because it has been too wet to get gravel trucks.
