Darwin suburb slowly gets back online

Posted June 7, 2007 09:33:00

Up to 400 homes and businesses in Darwin's Fannie Bay have had their phones, internet and EFTPOS services reconnected this morning.

A contractor yesterday cut an underground copper cable near the Darwin Sailing Club sending parts of the suburb into a communication meltdown.

700 homes and businesses were affected.

Telstra's Customer Services Officer Stuart Lines says staff worked throughout the night.

"Each service is basically two wires and we've got obviously two locations to join around the damaged sets of cable," he said

"So all up there's something like six thousand wires that have to be individually jointed and they've done exceptionally as I said pass the half way mark this morning."
