Hundreds expected to protest against amalgamations

Posted June 8, 2007 12:00:00

Burnett region mayors and councillors say they are not the only ones angry about proposed amalgamations, and expect hundreds of residents to join them in a day of protest.

The organisers of today's protest in Gayndah expect hundreds of people from the Kolan, Isis, Monto, Perry, Eidsvold, Mundubberra and Wondai shires to take part.

The Perry Shire Mayor, Joy Jensen, says it is a grassroots campaign supported by residents who fear their communities will be devastated by amalgamations.

"To continually get that message through to the Government that the community are not happy," she said.

"They feel cheated."

The Monto deputy Mayor, Trevor Gleeson, says most mayors in the region are paid less than $30,000 and do the job because they are passionate about the community.

"They've got no other ulterior motive," he said.

The Local Government Minister, Andrew Fraser, says people should wait and see what the Local Government Reform Commission decides in August.
