Dog's electric blanket blamed for Laverton house fire

Posted June 16, 2007 11:06:00

A faulty electric blanket is being blamed for a fire that has destroyed a house at Laverton in Melbourne's west this morning.

No-one was in the McNamara Road house when the fire started just before 5:00am AEST.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade's Geoff Audsley says it quickly destroyed the weatherboard home and claimed the life of a pet dog.

"Preliminary investigations tend to suggest that the fire started on the couch in the lounge room possibly from an electric blanket that was left on for the family pet to keep warm overnight," he said.

"An electric blanket which is being used to keep a pet warm is probably not the best idea in this particular case."
