11 missing after S Korean ship sinks

Posted July 12, 2007 22:20:00

Eleven crew members are missing after a South Korean cargo ship sank off Oman.

South Korean officials say the 26,000-ton Orchid Sun with 23 crew members - eight South Koreans, 13 Filipinos and two Chileans - sank on its way to Iran from China.

They say 12 crew men have been rescued by nearby ships and rescue helicopters sent by Oman.

Those saved include three Koreans, six Filipinos, two Chilean and one unidentified man.

The Yonhap news agency says one Korean sailor was rescued by a Japanese military ship.

A US Navy ship is taking part in the rescue mission, which also involves Oman and Pakistan.

South Korean authorities say the ship, which was carrying 42,000 tons of iron products, sank after its hold began rapidly taking in water.
