Strong competition expected for new Qld yacht race

Posted July 18, 2007 12:45:00

Organisers of a new yacht race off the Queensland coast are expecting strong entries for next month's event.

Thirteen crews have already entered for the first 340 nautical mile Brisbane to Great Keppel Island race.

Suellen Hurling from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron says there is a strong field.

"[There's] Sweetheart which has done the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and Wedgetail does very well in all the races that it does up and down the coast of Australia including Hobart, and it's just about to do the next Sydney to Gold Coast yacht race," she said.

"As well as Wisabi, which was an entrant into the Melbourne to Osaka yacht race - unfortunately they had to pull out.

"And the guys who were on board Koumalu in Hobart have actually got another boat called Margaret Rintoul II."
