Telstra to work on Pilliga 'communications black spot'

Posted August 1, 2007 14:03:00

Telstra says it is working with the northern New South Wales community, Pilliga, to address a communications black spot.

The township and surrounding area have no mobile phone coverage or communications for emergency services.

The community has been lobbying for a telecommunications tower to be erected.

Telstra Country Wide regional general manager Elise Munise says similar results to the northern NSW village of Yetman could be achieved in Pilliga.

"The issue isn't just about the fact there's no mobile coverage, but it's a basic communications black spot if you like," she said.

"So we're looking at working with some of the state and local authorities and obviously in conjunction with Country Energy and Telstra to deliver a communications tower which would also see them receive some mobile coverage as well."
