Working together to better manage asthma

A asthma study commissioned by the University of Tasmania shows that increased collaboration between pharmacists and GPs could help sufferers manage their disease.
The study used computer software to identify 15 000 adults as having poorly managed asthma - people who rely heavily on their reliever medication and not using their preventer medicine.
University researcher, Bonnie Bereznicki says pharmacist records provided a wealth of information on daily asthma management.
"On average they were actually using, when we looked at their dispensing history, they were using an average of seven puffs of reliever medication per day," she said.
"That's in excess of the guidelines set out by the asthma foundation, which usually recommend no more than three puffs per week."
