ASIO fights to keep security risk documents secret

Posted September 21, 2007 13:00:00

The Australian Security Intelligence Association (ASIO) will continue its court fight today to keep secret its reasons for finding a US protester and two detainees on Nauru were national security risks.

American peace activist Scott Parkin and two Iraqi refugees, Muhammad Faisal and Mohammed Sagar, were never told why they received adverse security assessments.

Last year, the Federal Court ruled that the men should be allowed to see documents explaining why they were security risks.

Today there will be legal argument about which documents should be released.

The men's lawyer Anne Gooley says they deserve answers.

"We're not expecting a decision today, but we certainly hope this matter could be sped up," she said.

"After all it's been going on for two years and we haven't yet got to this preliminary stage yet."
