A 26-year-old Rutherford man is due to appear in court today, charged over the armed robbery of the Adamstown Rosebuds club last night in the New South Wales Hunter region.

Police say just before 7:00pm AEST, two men went into the club armed with a metal bar and a machete.

One grabbed the cash register and fled, but patrons inside the Adamstown club managed to stop the second man from leaving.

One patron was hit in the head with the metal bar during the scuffle.

Police charged the man with armed robbery - he is due to appear in Newcastle local court today.
