Ex-teacher admits being close to young student

Posted November 5, 2007 16:05:00

A former primary school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student in Adelaide has admitted he spent a lot of time with the boy.

Brett Ronald MacBeth, 41, is accused of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old student and procuring him to perform sex acts, three years ago.

MacBeth has taken the stand in the District Court in his own defence and has denied the allegations.

MacBeth admitted giving the boy a mobile phone and said, in retrospect, some of the messages he sent the student were probably inappropriate.

The accused also admitted he may have given the boy lifts home from school occasionally but denied following him home.

The former teacher told the jury he now realises that the boy became too close to him.

But he repeated that nothing inappropriate happened.
