Police to probe false alarm

Posted November 12, 2007 06:30:00

Marine police are to investigate a false report overnight that a boat with at least three people on board was sinking off Southern Tasmania.

Police went to Frederick Henry Bay about nine o'clock last night, after a boat was reported to be sinking about five kilometres from shore.

Two police vessels, the Dodges Ferry coastguard and the rescue helicopter combed the area until two in the morning, but did not find anything.

Meanwhile, a man is recovering in hospital after falling off a 40-metre cliff in Tasmania's South-East yesterday afternoon.

The man was with a group of friends at Clifton Beach when he fell, seriously injuring his head and arm.

The man was winched to safety by the police rescue helicopter.

He is now in in a serious but stable condition in the Royal Hobart Hospital.
