Indigenous mayors face pay cuts

Posted December 6, 2007 11:30:00

The Aboriginal Local Government Association of Queensland says several Indigenous mayors face pay cuts under local government reforms.

Queensland mayors and councillors will no longer set their own salaries after the release of the local government remuneration tribunal's report.

A far north Queensland Indigenous Mayor says while he will not be affected by changes to pay rates under local Government reforms, many of his colleagues will.

Yarrabah mayor and chairman of the association Vince Mundraby says several Indigenous mayors face pay cuts.

"The Yarrabah Council have been operating within the scale for a number of years and whilst we do welcome the formalisation of the pay scale, we must flag that the review of the funding that goes to Aboriginal councils would need to be reviewed as a serious matter," he said.

The new pay structure means Indigenous mayors will not be able to earn more than $69,000 from March.
