A man has drowned while diving in the Tasmania's south.

The 38 year old was diving near Slopen Island, near Nubeena, when it appears he got caught in kelp.

Police received the initial call from Coastal Radio at shortly after midday, saying that the man had stopped breathing.

"A paramedic was dispatched with sea rescue from Dodges Ferry to the site of this incident, where they found a middle aged male," he said.

"They've attempted to resuscitate that patient unsuccessfully, and the incident is now in the hands of the police."
