Hewitt crushes Acasuso to advance in Adelaide

Posted January 3, 2008 23:05:00

Top seed Lleyton Hewitt made light work of Argentine Jose Acasuso in reaching the quarter-finals of the Adelaide International 6-2, 6-2 at Memorial Drive in Adelaide on Thursday evening.

The former world number one was in dominant form as he wrapped up victory in 62 minutes, setting up a semi-final against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

Tsonga, who beat the Australian in their only previous meeting, was too strong for Latvian Ernests Gulbis, crushing the teenager 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last eight.

For 1998 champion Hewitt, who hit eight aces on his way to a convincing win over Acasuso, his victory put him into the last eight for the sixth time in eight appearances.

"It was good, he is such a dangerous opponent," Hewitt said.

"If you play into his hands he can really dictate play. I was aggressive at the start putting a bit of doubt in his mind, especially in his service games. Finally he played a bit of a loose game and I hussled to get the break."

Third seed Jarkko Nieminen was too strong for Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic, advancing to the last four with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Nieminen now plays veteran American Vince Spadea, who beat German Mischa Zverev 6-3, 7-5.
