Western Power flags compensation if responsible for blaze

Posted January 5, 2008 23:00:00

Western Power says it will compensate members of the public who lost property in a bushfire during the week, if the utility is found to be responsible for the blaze.

The blaze started on Thursday and burnt through parts of Parkerville and Stoneville in Perth destroying two houses and several sheds.

Mark de Laeter from Western Power says it may have been sparked by a tree branch coming into contact with a power line.

"Certainly regardless of what exactly is the mechanism of the fire Western Power expresses it's sympathy to the the people who have been affected by the fire and if indeed Western Power is found to be responsible either in full or in part, then Western Power will certainly engage in discussions around compensation," Mr de Laeter said.

"The early indications for this event are that our powerlines were involved through a tree branch, there's no evidence or suspicion that clashing conductors or clashing wires is at the heart of the matter."
