Poor security hampers Kenya food aid efforts

Posted January 6, 2008 22:47:00

As Kenya's humanitarian crisis worsens diplomatic efforts are being stepped up to try to bring relief to the shattered country.

The United Nations World Food Program is attempting to get more than 600 tonnes of aid from Kenya's port of Mombasa to the capital Nairobi, but it is being frustrated by the poor security situation along the way.

Attempts to ease tensions in the country continue although opposition leader Raila Odinga insists President Mwai Kibaki must resign before progress can be made.

"Kenyans must not die because a power hungry individual insists he must remain in power. We need international mediation," Mr Odinga said.

Further talks are underway in an effort to find a breakthrough.
