Summernats organisers defend security

Posted January 7, 2008 21:08:00

Summernats organisers have defended security arrangements at the Canberra car festival after a mob allegedly marched through the event on Saturday night, yelling and harassing women.

It has been reported that several hundred people marched through Exhibition Park on Saturday night, with no intervention from security staff.

ACT Police Minister Simon Corbell says he is concerned.

"Any sort of behaviour which results in intimidation or threatening behaviour towards anyone, particularly women, is unacceptable," he said.

Organisers say they were in control of the situation at all times.

Police say they were liaising with event security throughout the 45 minutes that the march lasted.

Commander Shane Connelly says this year's Summernats was an improvement.

"Summernats this year would be probably described as slightly quieter than last year's," he said.

The ACT Opposition has called for troublemakers to be blacklisted from future Summernats festivals.
