Power restored to most NT homes after cyclone

Posted January 7, 2008 21:17:00

Nearly all of the 15,500 Top End homes that lost power during Cyclone Helen on Friday night have been reconnected.

It has been another busy day for council workers as well as the Power and Water Corporation.

Darwin City Council crews were again out with their chainsaws cleaning up trees strewn across the city.

Areas along the foreshore were the focus of today's clean-up but it is likely to be weeks before they will reach the suburban parks.

Crew coordinator Paul Dixon says it has been tough in the humidity.

"I think most of the crews went through their five litres of water," he said.

Power and Water's Managing Director Andrew Macrides says crews have been working around the clock to restore power to homes today.

"There's probably around about 100 to 150 customers still [without power]," he said.

Most of those homes are at Dundee Beach west of Darwin.

Power and Water says it hopes to have all of Darwin's temporary power poles replaced with permanent poles within the next 48 hours.
