Stoner says criminals benefit if weekend jail scrapped

Posted January 7, 2008 21:23:00

The New South Wales Opposition says the Iemma Government's proposed changes to periodic detention will be another concession to the state's criminals.

State Attorney-General John Hatzistergos is considering scrapping weekend detention, saying periodic detention does not change a person's behaviour.

Mr Hatzistergos says he is looking at a recommendation by the state's Sentencing Council to look at community correction orders.

But Acting Opposition Leader Andrew Stoner says this is a soft option that works in criminals' favour.

"There's no doubt that criminals in the past have manipulated our justice system," he said.

"This latest backdown by the Iemma Labor Government in relation to periodic detention, we think would be further abused and manipulated by the criminal element."
