Youth mental health service to start soon

Posted January 8, 2008 22:25:00

A new mental health service for young northern Tasmanians should be open within two months.

The Federal Government has granted almost $1 million to create the Headspace service using a network of local doctors and health professionals.

Phil Edmondson from General Practice North says the new Launceston service is a coordinated approach, providing free or low-cost intervention for young people aged between 12 and 25.

"Services will be available under the new model within a matter of weeks, possibly a month or two," he said.

"Basically we're immediately embarking on the process of setting up systems and structures of service delivery that will form the basis of what will be a long-term model."
