Men refused bail over Wadeye riot

Two men charged with taking part in a riot at the remote Northern Territory community of Wadeye on Christmas Day have been refused bail.

Eric Longmair, 22, and Gerard Karui, 18, were charged with disorderly behaviour and going armed in public after the community of Wadeye descended into gang violence on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2007.

At a bail hearing today in the Darwin Magistrates Court, their lawyer, Chris McGorey, said the case against the men was weak.

He said it relied solely on video footage of the riot that did not show them clearly.

Mr McGorey said if the men were not granted bail they would spend months on remand before a committal hearing is held at Wadeye in March.

But magistrate Greg Cavanagh refused the bail application because, he said, at the time of the riots both Longmair and Karui were on suspended sentences for similar offences.
