Liberal MP presses for Warley Hospital funding

Posted January 14, 2008 20:46:00

Today's health deal between the state and Federal governments has been criticised for not including help for Phillip Island's troubled hospital.

The Warley Hospital is due to close at the end of the month because it cannot afford to pay staff.

Liberal Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt, says the Rudd Government should honour a promise made by the previous government, to provide $2.5 million to the hospital.

"For today's announcement, which excluded funding for Warley Hospital, in a $600 million package, is a bitter blow to Phillip Island, to tourists, to residents, to nurses who will lose their jobs," he said.

A spokesman for federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon says today's deal specifically targeted cuts to the elective surgery waiting list, and Warley Hospital is a separate issue.
