Crews to work through night on Bellingham blaze

Posted January 16, 2008 23:11:00

Firefighters are working in and around the coastal village of Bellingham in Tasmania's north, as an out of control blaze continues to advance towards nearby homes.

More than 40 firefighters are trying to contain the eastern edge of the 300-hectare blaze, which has been burning freely since early this afternoon.

Spokesman Jeremy Smith says at this stage, about 30 homes are in danger.

"We had a significant wind change early in the evening and it's pushing the fire back towards the village of Bellingham," he said.

"Certainly firefighting activities will be occurring all through the night, and it's not until first light that we'll get a full comprehensive view of what's happening."
