Inquiry opened into reported Olympic stadium deaths

Posted January 22, 2008 22:02:00

An inquiry has been launched into reports that at least 10 workers have died during the construction of the new Olympic stadium in Beijing.

Senior safety official Li Yizhong said those responsible would be punished severely if the reports were true.

The claims were made by UK newspaper the Sunday Times, citing unnamed witnesses to the deaths which reportedly occurred after construction of the National Stadium, nicknamed the 'Bird's Nest', began in 2003.

The paper said families had been paid to keep quiet.

Earlier, the spokesperson for the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games Sun Weide denied the story.
