A man, believed to be a former AFL footballer, has been questioned over the assault of two police officers at Port Melbourne on Sunday evening.

Police were called to the flat in Rouse Street around 8:00pm AEDT, by a man in his 30s who wanted a woman removed from his property.

The man spoke to police at the front door, and is alleged to have then assaulted two officers, who used capsicum spray to overpower him.

The man has been interviewed at St Kilda Police station, and a brief of evidence will be prepared in relation to assault police.

Police have released the man, who did not need treatment after being sprayed.
