Midwifery under microscope at Royal Women's

Posted January 28, 2008 22:34:00

A study of midwifery services will be carried out at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne.

It will look at two groups of 1,000 women and compare the use of a single midwife to the current system, where several midwives may be involved.

Dr Helen McLachlan from Latrobe University says the study will contribute to a revision of the State Government's health policy.

"We'll be certainly looking at things like the type of birth, women's experience of giving birth, their experience after the birth," she said.

"[The study will be] following up to six months, so [it will look at] things like breastfeeding, postnatal depression, confidence in parenting."
