Foreign aid workers among 4 dead in Somali blast

Posted January 28, 2008 23:43:00

Four people, including two foreign aid workers, were killed in an explosion in the southern Somali town of Kismayo, a local official, aid sources and witnesses said.

The sources said the two foreigners were believed to work for the Dutch branch of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF - Doctors without Borders).

A local employee of MSF-Holland said the four were killed when their car was destroyed by an explosion and added that the victims were one European, one Kenyan and two Somalis.

"Some aid workers were killed in Kismayo today," local human rights activist Hasan Kafi said.

"They were coming back from the hospital and heading back to their house when a roadside bomb hit their car.

"A white man..., a Kenyan and their driver were killed, as well as a local journalist who was passing by."

MSF's regional office confirmed that an incident had taken place in Kismayo but could not release more information.

A doctor at Kismayo hospital said the bodies of two foreigners and two Somalis had been brought in and added that another Kenyan was being treated for injuries.
