Polls open in Florida primary

Posted January 29, 2008 23:47:00

Republicans and Democrats in the US state of Florida have started to vote in their state's primary election.

The poll is expected to play a crucial role in deciding who becomes the Republican presidential nominee.

The frontrunners John McCain and Mitt Romney are tightly matched, while the former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani needs a surprise win to keep his campaign alive.

The Democratic contest between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is purely symbolic because the party has stripped Florida of its delegates for breaking party rules.
