Uganda building collapses, 4 dead

Posted January 30, 2008 22:45:00

A five-storey building collapsed just outside the Ugandan capital Kampala, killing at least four people, injuring eight, and trapping about 30 others inside, police said.

"Since we started the rescue operations two hours ago, we have retrieved eight people [injured] and four dead bodies," police spokesman Gabriel Tibayungwa said.

The building meant for a school was still under construction and those in the building were workers, police said.

The incident was the second in two years. Officials have previously warned construction companies against shoddy building. Some firms use substandard materials or insufficient cement to cut back costs.
