New South Wales Hunter Valley police say three people are assisting with their investigation into the suspicious death of a 55-year-old man at Aberdeen last week.

Garry Wiggins, the father of British track cyclist and multiple Olympic gold medal winner Bradley Wiggins, was found unconscious in Segenhoe Street last Friday morning and later died in Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.

A post-mortem examination has revealed he died from a head injury.

Hunter Valley local area commander Superintendent John Graulton says police are investigating the events leading up to Mr Wiggins' death and what caused the head injury.

"Local investigators are working in consultation with state crime command detectives," he said.

"Three people have already assisted police with our enquiries, although we are appealing to anyone who might have seen anything of any note on the night of the 24th of January in either Macqueen, which is the New England Highway, or Segenhoe Street at Aberdeen, if they could contact Crime Stoppers."

Mr Wiggins was a former professional track cyclist who represented Australia in the late 1970s.
