Artist guilty of child porn possession, distribution

Posted May 22, 2008 07:37:00

A Finnish court has found a Helsinki artist guilty of possessing and distributing child pornography after she created an piece meant to criticise such pictures.

But the court ruled not to punish her.

Police confiscated a work by Ulla Karttunen, 52, from the Kluuvi Gallery after a member of the public complained.

The piece was made up of child pornography pictures taken from the internet

Karttunen claimed the piece was meant to criticise pornography featuring children.

She had her home searched and a computer and camera memory card confiscated.

"It would be unreasonable to sentence the accused because she tried to do what lawmakers were trying to do by making it punishable to own and spread child pornography," the Helsinki District Court said.

The pictures will not be returned to Karttunen.
