Castlemaine vies for UN green awards

Posted June 4, 2008 14:03:00

The town of Castlemaine is a finalist in two categories of this year's World Environment Day Awards.

It is World Environment Day tomorrow and the awards will be announced by the United Nations Association of Australia on Friday.

The Mount Alexander Shire is up for a local governance award for excellence in overall environment management.

The Mount Alexander Shire Community Action Network is also a finalist in the community award category for its efforts in carbon reduction.

Shire Mayor Alan Elliot says the nominations will spur on other members of the community to reduce their carbon footprint.

"We're very excited about it and I think it's very deserved that we're finalists and hopefully winners," he said.

"These awards acknowledge actions taken at a local level to address global environment issues."
