Resorts set to make snow as ski season opens

Posted June 6, 2008 14:48:00

This weekend marks the official opening of the ski season in the Snowy Mountains and resort operators are hoping for a good turnout, despite the absence of snow.

They admit that this weekend is more for social activities but are basing their optimism for the winter season on forecasts of good snowfall and their own ability to create snow.

At Thredbo, the resort has embarked on a multi-million dollar snow-making plan to ensure the maximum number of ski days.

At Perisher, operations manager Gary Grant says if mother nature does not cooperate his resort also has its 'plan b'.

"We put in a fair amount of snow-making this year," he said.

"Once the temperature gets where we want it to be and we turn these on we will certainly be able to make a lot of snow.

"At the same time, we are being told this is going to be an above average season so we just hope that the weather forecasters are correct.

"For this time of year, this is normal.

"We have just gone back through the records for the last 25 years and just and a look at how much snow we had on those weekends and this is pretty well average."
