Unleaded petrol was selling for just under $1.58 per litre at a fuel outlet in Bendigo yesterday.

The president of the Castlemaine branch of the Combined Pensioners and Superannuation group, Gordon Guest, says many pensioners are living from week to week.

He says they are rethinking the types of food they buy and cancelling trips away to help make ends meet.

Mr Guest says pensions and other government support are failing keep up with rising costs.

"Ten years ago I was on the single pension for while and paying rent," he said.

"It wasn't too bad, but the rents have gone about 60 per cent higher, but ... [pensions have] only gone up 20 per cent in the rental allowance."
