No action yet on Kosciuszko brumbies plan

The National Parks and Wildlife Service says any action to manage wild horses in the Kosciuszko National Park may yet be a while away.

After considering 63 submissions on the contentious issue, the service's head office is yet to sign off on a management plan for the horses.

The service is not saying how many of the 1,700 brumbies will be removed because of damage to sensitive alpine areas.

Regional manager for the south-west slopes, Steve Horsley, says he expects to announce what measures will be taken in the next few weeks.

"We identified a number of key areas where we wanted to take horses out, but some of those are very remote locations so we'll have to look at the weather conditions at the time and stay tuned with the approval process and the final outcomes of the plans," he said.

"As soon as we have the plan finalised we'll be letting the community know."

EDITOR'S NOTE: The original version of this story put the number of brumbies in the Kosciuszko National Park at 17,000. This is incorrect. It should have read 1,700. This was a typographical error in the sub-editing process. The story was amended on June 12.
