Seminar focuses on tsunami response

Posted June 13, 2008 10:29:00

A Capricorn Coast councillor says emergency response authorities have leaned a lot about tsunamis over the past year.

When he was the Livingstone Shire mayor, Bill Ludwig evacuated low lying parts of the coast when a tsunami alert was issued in April last year.

No tsunami arrived.

Authorities have held a seminar this week to discuss tsunami response.

Cr Ludwig says there is now better monitoring available.

"There's been deployment of marine buoys that have the capability of picking up seismic activity and then relaying the information effectively when an event happens," he said.

"The buoys are activated, they are then on alert watching for the potential tsunami event and when the tsunami wave passes the buoy it then relays that information to the observers."
