Several high schools across the New England and north-west New South Wales will benefit from the first round of Federal Government's $1.2 billion computers in schools programs.

Duval, Tamworth High and McCarthy Catholic College will all receive more than 200 computers.

Armidale, Farrer, Gunnedah, and Inverell High will get more than 150.

Schools at Glen Innes, Narrabri, Tenterfield, Uralla, Walcha, St Mary's College in Gunnedah and PLC in Armidale will also get computers.

The regional director of Catholic schools, Rick Johnston, says five of its secondary departments will get the new computers.

He says while there will be initial teething problems with slower computer speeds, they will be fixed in time.

"With their planning over four elements, fibre connections, the development of curriculum that can be used by computers, the training of teachers and the web portals that involve parents in the educational process, it's an initiative we need to make work," he said.
