MPs question Medicare funding for late-term abortions

Posted June 17, 2008 17:22:00

A number of federal Coalition MPs have raised the prospect of withdrawing Medicare funding for late-term abortions.

The current practice ensures Medicare payments are available for women who want a late-term abortion on the advice of their doctor.

Six Opposition MPs raised the issue during a joint party room meeting today.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson says he is not in favour of removing the funding.

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has called for any discussion on the issue to be reasonable.

"I hope if there is a move to have this discussion it will be one that will be a sensible and mature discussion," she said.

"I think it is a discussion that can sometimes end up at the extremes."
