Union ordered to IRC over ammonia plant row

Posted June 18, 2008 12:21:00

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) says it has received an order to attend the Federal Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) over a dispute at Burrup Holdings' Pilbara ammonia plant.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) had been investigating claims a gas explosion on site resulted in a worker being taken to hospital yesterday.

WorkSafe says there was no explosion but has confirmed an ammonia leak.

In a statement, the company described the explosion allegations as "mischievous".

The AMWU says the CFMEU has also received an order to attend this morning's IRC hearing.

"It's very disappointing for us that it's here in 2008 and we still can't talk about how to make the workplace safer without trying to drag people into federal court."
